Alkina
Viticulture: Certified biodynamic
Barossa Valley, South Australia
Alkina is an ongoing quest is to grow terroir-reflective fruit from Barossa heritage varieties and elaborate them with simple and transparent winemaking, both as blends of blocks and micro-parcels called ‘Polygons’. First planted to vines by Les Kalleske in 1955.
Pure. Authentic. Terroir Wines. Alkina is a new story on an old place. It’s a journey through ancient stones and soils, organic and biodynamic viticulture, small scale winemaking and the creation of unique microterroir wines.
The way they understand and farm their micro-terroirs is entirely about communicating their unique characters and detail in the bottle. Each tiny plots of vines has been mapped from a geology point of view, and then picked, vinified and matured separately.
It is still something of a mystery why old soils are so different and so interesting. However, mature vines of the right varieties on the right soil will have deep root systems, and “vines feeding at depth are more likely to make complex and interesting wine.”
