Marco Lubiana

Viticulture: Certified biodynamic
Region: Huon Valley, Tasmania

Marco has biodynamic farming in his blood and his wines are carefully farmed and brought to bottle with a hands’ off, natural methodology.

Marco Lubiana is the latest of his bloodline to take up winemaking and the name needs no introduction into the world of wine with Marco’s father Steve founding the acclaimed biodynamic wine label Stefano Lubiana in Tasmania in 1990. With a passion for Burgundy it’s no secret that Marco has turned his deft touch to those two varieties.

“I am very lucky to be able to work with old (1973) plantings, which is very rare in Tasmania. I often think Australian winemakers can sometimes get a bit carried away with making many varieties and styles and sometimes lose the essence of the variety. By only having two wines, I know I can do my best to make them into something special.”

“My wine style is firstly defined by the terroir of the vineyard from where the grapes are grown. When the grapes are picked at perfect balance with low yields, it provides a wine style driven by soft tannins, fine natural acidity and great intensity.”

With the vineyard taking its rightful place at the core of his thinking, and a gentle approach in the winery Marco is happy to continue his exploration of his chosen grapes through the lens of shifting seasons, and it’s no wonder given his belief in their suitability to the state.
