Stoney Rise / Holyman
Viticulture: Minimal intervention
Region: Tamar Valley, Tasmania
“I love the Holyman Chardonnay. One of my top producers in Australia,” says Gary Walsh of The Wine Front on the one hand. And on the other: “I’d argue this comes from one of the best Pinot sites in the country, from one of the best Pinot winemakers.
Joe and Lou Holyman are the custodians of one of the very best vineyards in Tasmania (1986 plantings) and they know the fruit very, very well. The wines are top-class, possessing all the hallmarks: power, poise, structure and depth.
They are growers who take the quality of their work dead seriously, but with the creativity and fearlessness to push the envelope. The principle of honouring great terroir and year after year they rival the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Tasmania - or anywhere on mainland Australia.
The wines are made in a lighter and lifted style, picked earlier and see a good amount of whole-bunch fermentation to add structure and aromatic complexity, and really underpin that sense of crunchy freshness that characterises Joe’s wines.
The Stoney Rise range would be considered some of the best value wines in the land. They are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
