Does Traviarti make Australia best Nebbiolo?
Most likely, yes.
Campbell Mattinson declared Traviarti “one of Beechworths best producers” and included them in the Top 100 Wineries in Australia.
He posed the question, “Does Traviarti make Australia’s best Nebbiolo?” and answers his own question, “Most likely yes”.
“There’s something special unfolding here. There are other wines in the stable and they all live up to the Top 100 brief, in that they’re all reliably good, and worth buying. But the Nebbiolo. The Nebbiolo. We are really reaching for the heights here.”
The vineyard, planted to 100% Nebbiolo at 600m altitude on red decomposed shale and mudstone soils is just above the Beechworth township. Planted to multiple clones on a combination of different rootstocks and own root material this 1000 vine (.4ha) site is producing some of the most exciting and enticing Nebbiolo in Australia.
Of course, no Beechworth producer’s line up would be complete without a Chardonnay – razor sharp and flavoursome.
